July 2024
Dear Fellow Alumni and Friends,
I hope you are enjoying your summer and getting some well-deserved rest and downtime! Last month, we welcomed the newest members of the Valpo family at our annual FOCUS events. Our incoming students learned about campus resources, took campus tours, registered for classes, and learned about all the great opportunities to get involved in campus life. We can't wait to welcome them back in the fall!
This month's newsletter features several stories of alumni who continue to accomplish great things in their communities. We're always proud to learn about these accomplishments and cheer you on. If you have some great news, submit a class note so we can share it with your fellow alumni and celebrate YOU!

A Fulfilling Journey
Antuane Thompson '20
Antuane Thompson, ’20, had plenty of options regarding his higher education plans. He was accepted to multiple universities while participating in a college degree path program at his high school. Thompson visited several of these campuses but says Valpo had something special he was looking for. “I kind of just fell in love with Valpo and the culture. I knew it was the school for me.”

Update on Valparaiso University's
Operational Sustainability Initiative
On June 20, 2024, Valparaiso University shared an update on its Operational Sustainability Initiative, established to support the strategic plan's goals. Initiated last summer, these efforts aim to refine Valpo's operations, reduce costs, and invest in new approaches that will enable the University to grow and continue fulfilling its mission. These changes were based on the findings of an administrative review process that involved extensive data analysis and input from across the University. Several departmental reporting lines have shifted, including Human Resources, Title IX, Auxiliary Services, Recreational Sports, and Intramurals. As part of this process, 14 positions were also eliminated. The Student Life division, University Communications, the Brauer Museum, and other non-academic departments underwent downsizing to enhance operational efficiency. One operational adjustment is the temporary closure of the Brauer Museum. Plans are underway to reopen the museum in the fall semester once appropriate oversight is in place.
The Uplift Valpo strategic plan, adopted in 2021, is organized around four themes: Learn, Serve, Lead, and Thrive. To meet the plan’s ambitious goals, we must think about and approach our work differently. These decisions are undoubtedly challenging, but they are made with the best interests of Valparaiso University and our students in mind. Our goal is to secure a stable and promising future for our institution.

Class Notes
“I don't think I had the slightest clue about how 4 years at Valpo would change me from the shy, introverted person who walked onto campus in 1964 to someone who would go on into Seminary and ordained ministry in the ELCA. When I look back on those four years at Valpo I can see so many of the ways God was preparing me for that life. There were friends and fraternity brothers who came into my life who ultimately would support the call into ministry. There were professors who, though they may not have known it, gave me just the wisdom I would need in that call. 77 years behind me have been so full of blessings they cannot be counted. The people I served at congregations in Jordan, MT; Madison, Minnesota; and finally, 29 years in Woodbridge, VA, taught me how to be a pastor. Valpo taught me to use the gifts God had given me.”
